iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold8: Which Foldable Should You Buy?

Short answer: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 wins

For most people buying a foldable right now, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is the safer pick. It costs about $100 less, is lighter and thinner, has been independently tested for months and you can buy it today, often below list price. If you're already on iPhone, the iPhone Duo is the first foldable worth switching to, with a tougher IP68 build and a crease reviewers barely noticed, but expect to wait until late January for new orders.

Hands-on analysis

How we put this comparison together

We haven’t had both phones in hand for a long-term test yet, and we won’t pretend otherwise. The iPhone Duo only launches on 23 October, and no outlet has published a full review or a measured battery test. This comparison is built from the manufacturers’ published specs and the reviews and hands-ons listed at the end of the page. Every number that comes from someone else’s testing is credited to them. Our scores are editorial judgements based on that evidence, and we’ll update this page once we’ve lived with both.

The short version

The iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold8 decision mostly comes down to which phone you already use. Both open into a 7.6-inch tablet-sized screen, both skip a telephoto camera and both cost close to $2,000. The differences that matter are weight, toughness and whether you can actually buy one this year.

Price and availability

The Galaxy Z Fold8 starts at $1,899.99 for 256GB, about $100 less than the iPhone Duo’s $1,999. The gap widens with deals. Android Headlines spotted the Fold8 at $1,549 on Amazon on 6 October, and Samsung is running up to $200 off until 2 November.

The iPhone Duo goes higher on storage, with a 2TB model at $3,199. The bigger issue is stock. Apple called pre-order demand “nothing short of extraordinary” (9to5Mac), and MacRumors reported US ship dates of around 25 January for every configuration. If you want a foldable for the holidays, the Fold8 is the one you can get.

Design and portability

This is where the Fold8 pulls ahead. It weighs 201g and measures 9.7mm closed, against 254g and 11.3mm for the Duo. Tom’s Guide and Gizmodo both noted that the Duo feels thicker in the hand. Android Central’s Harish Jonnalagadda said the Duo felt lighter than its weight suggests, and that it wobbles less than the Fold8 when used flat on a table.

Durability flips the result. The iPhone Duo is rated IP68, so it is protected against dust and submersion. The Fold8 is IP48, which means water resistance but essentially no dust protection. TechRadar, Tom’s Guide and Android Authority all list that as a weakness, since rivals like the Pixel 10 Pro Fold are IP68. There are also early, unverified owner reports of Fold8 inner screens cracking along the crease and of corners flexing (SammyFans, Talk Android). Samsung hasn’t commented, and we’d treat them as worth watching rather than as a known defect.

Screens and the crease

Both phones pair a roughly 5.5-inch outer screen with a 7.6-inch inner one at 120Hz. The shapes differ. The Fold8’s inner screen is a wide 4:3, which Tom’s Guide, Engadget and GSMArena all praise for video and reading. Android Authority found some apps, including Instagram and Slack, still show white bars on it.

Apple kept the same aspect ratio on both of the Duo’s screens and gave the inner one a matte nano-texture finish. In hands-ons, Tom’s Guide said “you can barely see the crease”, Android Central didn’t notice it even with the screen flat, and Gizmodo said it is “not completely invisible” at some angles. Reviewers say the Fold8’s crease is much shallower than older Folds but can still be felt.

On brightness, Apple quotes 3,000 nits outdoors for the Duo. GSMArena measured 3,132 nits on the Fold8’s inner screen. Both will be readable in sunlight.

Cameras

Neither phone has a telephoto lens, and every Fold8 review we read calls that its biggest compromise. The Duo uses a 48MP main and 48MP ultrawide; the Fold8 a 50MP main and 50MP ultrawide. Both offer a 2x crop from the main sensor. Android Authority found the Fold8 struggles beyond 3x to 4x, and Tom’s Guide called its 10x digital zoom soft. Tom’s Guide also points out that the Duo lacks ProRAW, ProRes and Log video, which Apple keeps for its Pro phones. For zoom shots, neither is the right phone.

Battery and charging

The Fold8 has the evidence. It carries a 4,800mAh battery and lasted 12 hours 19 minutes in Tom’s Guide’s web-surfing test, ahead of the Fold7’s 10h 44m. Engadget measured 28 hours 14 minutes of local video on the cover screen. GSMArena charged it from empty to full in 1 hour 9 minutes with a 45W charger.

The Duo uses two batteries, one in each half, and Apple hasn’t published the capacity. Apple rates it at up to 24 hours of typical use and says a 60W adapter reaches 50% in about 20 minutes. Those are Apple’s numbers. Until independent tests appear, we can’t say which lasts longer. The Duo does win on wireless charging, with 25W MagSafe built in. The Fold8 manages 20W and needs a case for Qi2 magnets.

Software and multitasking

The Fold8 runs Android 17 with One UI 9, gets seven years of updates, and can show up to three apps side by side. The Duo runs iOS 27 with two-app Split View, saved app pairs and a vertical Dynamic Island. Tom’s Guide calls it easy to use, but NeoTeo notes it is “not a desktop window manager” and depends on developers updating their apps. Apple doesn’t publish an update promise, but iPhones usually get many years of support. The Duo also drops Face ID for Touch ID in the side button, which Gizmodo called “a step backward”.

Questions people ask

Is the iPhone Duo better than the Galaxy Z Fold8?

Not across the board. The iPhone Duo has better water and dust resistance (IP68 vs IP48), more storage options and a matte inner screen that hides the crease well. The Galaxy Z Fold8 is cheaper, 53g lighter, thinner, runs three apps at once and has independently measured battery results. iPhone owners will prefer the Duo; everyone else will find the Fold8 the better value.

How much is the iPhone Duo compared with the Galaxy Z Fold8?

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB and goes up to $3,199 for 2TB. The Galaxy Z Fold8 starts at $1,899.99 for 256GB and tops out at $2,499.99 for 1TB. The Fold8 has also been on sale for as little as $1,549 at Amazon in early October 2026.

When can I get the iPhone Duo?

Apple launches the iPhone Duo on 23 October 2026, but it sold out within minutes of pre-orders opening on 16 October. MacRumors reported that new online orders show delivery around 25 January. Some Apple Stores may have limited walk-in stock on launch day.

Does either foldable have a telephoto camera?
